Save Facebook Stories before they expire
Meta Story share links frequently use facebook.com/stories/… paths that SMDownloader does not parse today. Copy while the story is live, check which URL Share provides, and use the matching downloader — watch, reel, or this page for guidance.

StoryStories expire after 24 hours. Copy Share → Copy link while the story is live — if the URL is fb.watch or facebook.com/reel/, our Video or Reels tools may work. facebook.com/stories/ paths often fail on the paste field.

Facebook Stories and which links work
Facebook Stories auto-delete after 24 hours. Copy Share → Copy link while the story is still visible. Our parser accepts facebook.com/watch, fb.watch, facebook.com/reel/, and Page post URLs — not facebook.com/stories/ share paths today. If preview fails, open the Story guide on our Video or Reels downloader with whichever URL Share actually copied.
How to save a Facebook Story (when the URL works)
- 1. Copy while live — Open the public story, tap Share → Copy link before the 24-hour timer ends. Note whether the copied URL contains /stories/, /reel/, fb.watch, or watch/?v=.
- 2. Pick the right tool — fb.watch and watch/?v= links → Facebook Video Downloader. facebook.com/reel/ → Reels Downloader. /stories/ links show a clear unsupported message here — try Video or Reels when Share provides those formats.
- 3. Preview and save — Click Download, check the preview matches the story media, then save immediately. Do not wait if the story is near expiry.
Why use SMDownloader
- 24-hour window. Stories disappear after one day unless saved as a Highlight. Copy and try download while the story is still live — expired links cannot be recovered.
- URL shape matters. Share sometimes copies fb.watch or reel URLs that work on our Video or Reels downloaders. Pure /stories/ paths from the Facebook app often fail /api/extract — we document that honestly here.
- Server-side resolution. When a pasted URL matches our Facebook parser, SMDownloader resolves media via /api/extract on our servers. You preview and save in your browser — no Facebook login on our site.

facebook.com/stories/… URLs from Share are not supported on the paste field today. Friends-only or custom-audience stories require login and will not work.
Expired stories cannot be downloaded retroactively. If /stories/ preview fails, retry with the Video or Reels downloader when Share provides fb.watch or /reel/ URLs instead.
Where files save
After you confirm a save, the file goes to your browser's default download location — usually Downloads on desktop or your photo gallery on mobile. SMDownloader does not host or email files.
Limits
What links will not work
- Bypass private accounts, close-friends stories, or login-only posts.
- Bulk-scrape entire profiles, hashtags, or channels automatically.
- Promise universal no-watermark, 4K, or DRM-free output when the source does not expose it.
Common questions
Does facebook.com/stories/ work on SMDownloader?
Usually no. Story share links that contain facebook.com/stories/ are not parsed by our Facebook extractor today. If Share copies fb.watch, watch/?v=, or facebook.com/reel/ instead, use the Video or Reels downloader — those URLs often preview successfully.
How do I download a Facebook Story before it expires?
Copy Share → Copy link while the story is live (within 24 hours). Paste the URL, click Download, and save immediately if preview loads. Speed matters — expired stories cannot be recovered.
Can I download an expired Facebook Story?
No. Once Meta removes the story after 24 hours, the share link stops resolving. No downloader can recover expired story media retroactively.
Do Facebook Story Highlights work?
Sometimes. Highlights use different URL patterns than live stories. Paste the Highlight link from Share — if it resolves as a watch, reel, or Page post URL, our other Facebook tools may preview it.
Why did my Facebook Story link fail?
Common causes: the URL is a /stories/ path we do not parse, the story expired, the poster restricted sharing, or the story is friends-only. Copy again from Share after confirming the story is public in a logged-out browser tab.
Video vs Reels vs Story URLs?
Long clips use fb.watch or facebook.com/watch/?v=. Reels use facebook.com/reel/…. Story Share often copies /stories/ — use this page for guidance, then try Video or Reels when Share provides those formats.
How does SMDownloader fetch Facebook media?
You paste a public link; our servers resolve supported URL shapes through /api/extract. You preview and save in your browser. Story /stories/ paths are outside current parser support.
Are Facebook Story downloads legal?
Saving your own stories or content you have permission to archive is generally fine. Do not republish someone else's story without consent.
SMDownloader is not affiliated with Facebook. Only download public content you have rights to save. See the Facebook downloader overview for all supported URL shapes.
