Cookie Policy
Last updated: September 9, 2026
A cookie is a small piece of data a website asks your browser to store and send back on later requests. Some cookies are required for a site to work at all; others exist only to help the site (or a third party it uses) understand how visitors use it. This page lists exactly which of each kind SMDownloader uses, and how to control the second kind.
Necessary — always on
smd_locale— remembers the language you're browsing in (en/es/fr/zh) so we don't guess wrong on your next visit. First-party, no personal data, set for 1 year.
This cookie is exempt from consent under most cookie-law frameworks because it's strictly necessary for a feature you directly requested (your chosen language) — it isn't used to track you across sites or build a profile, and there is no toggle for it.
Analytics — off until you allow it
We use Google Tag Manager to load Google Analytics, which helps us understand aggregate traffic (page views, general usage patterns) — not who you are individually. This is entirely optional: the underlying script is not requested by your browser at all until you click Accept all or turn on Analytics in the cookie bar's Customize panel. If you never opt in, or you click Reject non-essential, this script never loads.
When enabled, Google sets its own analytics cookies (typically named _ga, _ga_*, and similar) under Google's own retention and privacy terms — see Google's cookie policy. We do not send submitted download URLs to Google Analytics from our application code.
Your choice — and changing it later
The cookie bar appears on your first visit with three options: Accept all, Reject non-essential, or Customize (to turn Analytics on or off individually). Rejecting is exactly as easy as accepting — one click either way. Your choice is stored locally in your browser, not on our servers, and applies immediately without a page reload.
You can change your mind at any time: every page footer has a Cookie preferences link that reopens the bar with your current choice pre-filled. You can also clear your browser's site data for this domain to reset the decision entirely, and the bar will ask again on your next visit.
Not legal advice
This page describes what the site actually does, in plain language. It follows widely-recognized cookie-consent practice — opt-in before any non-essential cookie loads, an equally easy reject option, and an ongoing way to change your choice — but it isn't a certification of compliance with any specific law or jurisdiction.
