Extract original resolution photos from X posts

When photographers and creators publish pictures to X, the web interface serves compressed thumbnails like small or large across feeds to conserve bandwidth. However, X preserves the master upload on its media delivery network under the orig quality modifier. SMDownloader parses public status URLs (x.com or twitter.com), reads the attached photo entities, and resolves the direct high-resolution JPEG and PNG source files up to 4096×4096 pixels. Whether a post features an individual snapshot or a four-picture collage grid, every slide is extracted cleanly with original color depth, sharp fine details, and zero added compression artifacts. You get direct access to full-scale visual assets on iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows browsers without installing software or registering an account.

Why use SMDownloader

  • Multi-photo grid extraction. Extracts every attached picture from multi-image tweets in one request. Preview all slides in a clean gallery view and download individual files or the complete batch.
  • Master source resolution (orig quality). Retrieves uncompressed master files rather than downscaled browser previews. Preserves original dimensions up to 4K resolution with native color grading.
  • PNG transparency & JPEG fidelity. Maintains transparent alpha channels for illustrations and logos posted as PNGs, and keeps uncrushed compression profiles for detailed photography.
  • Browser-based, zero authentication. Works instantly on mobile and desktop web browsers. No browser add-ons, third-party apps, or X account sign-ins required to fetch public post media.

Help

Need help copying the link?

Step-by-step guides for grabbing the exact post URL from your phone or browser — then paste it into the field above.

All X copy guides

Supported link formats

  • https://twitter.com/username/status/TWEET_ID
  • https://x.com/i/status/TWEET_ID

Tracking parameters like ?s=20 are fine — paste the status link exactly as copied. Profile, search, and hashtag URLs are not supported.

Protected accounts, Spaces, and text-only posts will not return image files. For quote tweets, ensure you provide the URL of the specific post displaying the photos. Only save content you own or have permission to download.

Where files save

After you confirm a save, the file goes to your browser's default download location — usually Downloads on desktop or your photo gallery on mobile. SMDownloader does not host or email files.

Limits

What links will not work

  • Bypass private accounts, close-friends stories, or login-only posts.
  • Bulk-scrape entire profiles, hashtags, or channels automatically.
  • Promise universal no-watermark, 4K, or DRM-free output when the source does not expose it.

Common questions

Can I download all multiple photos from a single tweet?

Yes. Tweets on X can include up to four photos in a single grid layout. SMDownloader extracts all attached image entities simultaneously, allowing you to preview each frame and download them individually or consecutively without repeating the search.

Does this tool fetch the uncompressed original image or a web thumbnail?

SMDownloader targets X's master asset URLs using the highest fidelity parameter (name=orig). This delivers the uncompressed file as uploaded by the author (up to 4096×4096 resolution) rather than downsampled small, medium, or large preview derivatives.

Are PNG transparency layers preserved when saving pictures?

Yes. If an author uploads a graphic, banner, or illustration formatted as a PNG with transparent alpha channels, X retains the PNG container. SMDownloader extracts that exact source file so transparency is completely preserved.

How do I save X photos directly to my camera roll on iPhone or Android?

On iPhone running Safari, open the extracted image preview, tap the Share button, and select 'Save Image' to store it in Photos. On Android devices, tap the download button or hold the image preview and select 'Download image' to store it in your gallery.

Can I download pictures from quote tweets and replies?

Yes, as long as you copy the permalink of the actual status containing the image attachment. If you copy a quote tweet that merely discusses another post without embedding its own photos, copy the original author's status URL instead.

Why can't images be downloaded from protected X profiles?

Protected accounts restrict tweet visibility strictly to approved followers. Because our service operates without personal account credentials or session hijacking, it can only retrieve image assets from publicly accessible status links.

Does X remove EXIF metadata and GPS tags from downloaded photos?

X automatically strips EXIF metadata (including camera serials, exposure settings, and GPS coordinates) when media is uploaded to its servers for user privacy. The downloaded image retains maximum pixel fidelity, but sensitive location metadata is not present.

Can I extract images from X Articles or profile headers?

This tool specializes in timeline status posts (tweets) with attached photo media. Long-form X Articles and profile header banners use separate hosting endpoints and are not supported by the status URL parser.
