How to copy an Instagram video or IGTV link

Feed videos (/p/) and IGTV (/tv/) — paste on SMDownloader to save the MP4.

How to copy an Instagram video or IGTV link — step by step

Step 1 of 4

Open the video post

Find a public feed video or IGTV upload in the Instagram app or on instagram.com. The post must play as video — not a still-photo carousel or a reel. Reels use instagram.com/reel/ URLs and need the reel copy guide instead.

  1. Step 1: Open the video post. Find a public feed video or IGTV upload in the Instagram app or on instagram.com. The post must play as video — not a still-photo carousel or a reel. Reels use instagram.com/reel/ URLs and need the reel copy guide instead.
  2. Step 2: Copy the link. On mobile, tap the paper-plane Share icon, then choose Copy link. On desktop, copy the full URL from the browser address bar. Both methods produce the same public instagram.com/p/… or instagram.com/tv/… link.
  3. Step 3: Check the URL shape. Feed videos often use instagram.com/p/SHORTCODE/. IGTV uploads use instagram.com/tv/SHORTCODE/. If you see instagram.com/reel/ in the URL, you copied a reel — use the reel guide instead. Paste only /p/ or /tv/ links for this guide.
  4. Step 4: Paste and save. Open smdownloader.com, paste the copied URL into the download field, and click Download. Preview the MP4, pick your preferred quality if shown, then save the file to your device or computer.

Common questions

What is the difference between /p/, /tv/, and /reel/ URLs?

Feed videos use instagram.com/p/SHORTCODE/. IGTV uses instagram.com/tv/SHORTCODE/. Short-form reels use instagram.com/reel/SHORTCODE/ — see the reel copy guide for those.

Can I copy a video link from a private account?

No. The post must be public. If Instagram asks you to log in or follow the account to view it, Share → Copy link will not produce a URL SMDownloader can fetch.

Does Share → Copy link work on desktop too?

Yes. On instagram.com, click Share below the post and choose Copy link — or copy the address bar URL directly. Both produce the same public link.

Will SMDownloader save the video as MP4?

Yes. After you paste a valid /p/ or /tv/ URL and click Download, preview the file and save the MP4 to your device.
