Open the story while it is live

Stories disappear after 24 hours. Open the story from a public account in the Instagram app before the timer runs out. Close Friends and private-audience stories require login — those links will not work on SMDownloader.

  2. Step 2: Tap Share on the story. While viewing the story full screen, tap the paper-plane Share icon at the bottom. If Copy link is not listed there, tap the three-dot menu — some Instagram versions show Copy link in the overflow menu instead.
  3. Step 3: Copy link. Choose Copy link in the share menu. The copied URL should include instagram.com/stories/username/ in the path — for example instagram.com/stories/username/STORY_ID/. Avoid profile links or expired story previews from notifications.
  4. Step 4: Paste and save immediately. Open smdownloader.com right away, paste the copied story URL into the download field, and click Download. Preview the story video or image, then save to your device. Act fast — once the 24-hour window closes, the link stops working and cannot be recovered.
